A musician's journey, built on classical foundations

Koushik Mukherjee's relationship with music began the traditional way — with rigorous, disciplined training in Hindustani Classical Vocal. He went on to complete both his Bachelor's and Master's degrees in Hindustani Classical Vocal from Delhi University, building the kind of grounding in raag, taal and technique that most contemporary musicians never get the chance to acquire.

But classical training was only the starting point. Over the years that followed, Koushik taught himself to move fluidly between instruments and roles — picking up the guitar and piano alongside voice, and eventually stepping behind the mixing desk as a music producer. That range is rare: most musicians specialise in one instrument or one side of the studio. Koushik works comfortably as a performer, a producer, and a teacher, often all three in the same week.

To formalise his keyboard and piano practice against an international benchmark, he went on to complete Grade 8 from Trinity College London — the same graded certification track that Decibel's own Crescendo Keys and Crescendo Strings courses are built around today.

Not just one thing

Ask Koushik what he does, and the honest answer is "all of it." Across a career built on range rather than specialisation, he's worked in every seat in the room — as the voice, the hands on the instrument, the person behind the console, and the teacher guiding someone else's first note.

Recognition

Gotipua Documentary — Recognised at NIFFA

Beyond the studio and the classroom, Koushik has lent his musical craft to storytelling on screen — contributing to a documentary on Gotipua, the centuries-old traditional dance form performed by young boys in Odisha, which went on to earn recognition at NIFFA. It's a project close to his heart: a chance to use music in service of preserving a living piece of Indian cultural heritage, and to have that work acknowledged on a wider stage.

Why Decibel exists

With everything Koushik had already built — degrees, certifications, thousands of tracks, a decade of stage and studio experience — he could easily have kept all of it for himself. Instead, five years ago, he chose to teach. Decibel School of Music was founded on the belief that the same live, one-on-one attention that shaped his own training as a classical vocalist should be available to every student, whether they're chasing a Trinity College London certification or just picking up a guitar for the first time.

"I didn't want to just perform music or produce it — I wanted to pass on how to actually learn it. Everything I studied, from classical vocal training to production to Trinity Grade 8, exists in Decibel's courses now. That's the whole point of teaching." — Koushik Mukherjee, Founder
